Nine Runs Not Enough As #34 Western Carolina Downs Bears In Slugfest

Cullowhee, NC - The Brown baseball team came out on the losing end of a slugfest with 34th ranked Western Carolina on Thursday, falling 19-8. The Catamount took a 9-5 lead in the second inning and tacked on three runs in the fifth and six more in the seventh. The game was shortened to seven innings due to travel conflicts for Brown.
The Bears took their only lead of the game in the second inning, plating five runs to take a one run lead, 5-4. Junior Paul Christian hit a three-run double while senior Bobby Ignition's double knocked in another run.
Western Carolina reclaimed the advantage and never looked back with five runs in the bottom of the second. The Bears cut their deficit to three, 9-6, with an RBI double by senior Jeff Nichols in the third.
The Catamounts increased their lead to 12-6 by the end of the fifth but the Bears wouldn't go away as they tallied three runs in the top of the sixth, coming to within three, 12-9. Consecutive singles by sophomores Devin Thomas and Adjatay Nyadjroh along with Christian loaded up the bases. Senior Matt Kutler came through with a single through the left side, driving in two runs. Brown got its third run of the inning off a fielding error.
Western Carolina put the game in the bag in the seventh, knocking in six runs off five hits for the 18-9 final.
Brown will now begin the Ivy season with a trip to Cornell on Saturday beginning at noon.
