Bears Drop Fourth One-Run Game of the Week To Davidson

Davidson, NC - The Brown baseball team's woes continued as it fell on the losing side of another one run game, 7-6 to Davidson on Wednesday. The Bears have lost five of their last six games by one run and remain winless on the year with an 0-11 record. A five run sixth by the Wildcats gave them the lead for good as Brown stranded four runners in the final three innings.

The game began with an RBI single by sophomore Jeff Dietz, giving Brown a 1-0 lead.The next two innings went scoreless before Davidson evened up the score with a run in the fourth.

Senior Danny Hughes hit his second homerun in as many days in the fifth inning and junior Devin Thomas followed with a homerun of his own to give the Bears a 3-1 lead.

Davidson scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth to get to within one, 3-2, but Hughes drove in another run for Brown in the sixth. Senior Paul Christian hit a lead-off single and stole second before junior Bryan Tews moved him over to third with a sacrifice. Hughes then stepped to the plate and drilled one through the right side, scoring Christian.

The Wildcats delivered a dagger in the bottom of the sixth, scoring five runs to take the lead for good. Brown chipped away at the lead, getting to within a run, with a run in the seventh and another in the eighth but failed to get the tying run across the plate.

Christian extended his hitting streak to eight games as he went 2-4 with a double, one run driven in and one run scored. Hughes was 2-4 with two RBI. Also adding two hits apiece was junior Eric Larson and freshman Dan Shapiro.

Sophomore Alex Silverman started the game on the mound, pitching five innings. Junior Anthony Vita suffered the loss in his first appearance of the season.

Brown will get its final warm-up before Ivy League play starts, tomorrow at Greensboro College. The Bears will then play at Penn on Saturday in its Ivy opener.
