Lexington, VA - A six-run fourth inning by the Virginia Military Institute keyed a 12-7 victory over the Brown baseball team on Saturday. The Bears fall to 2-6 on the season while the seasoned Keydets improve to 16-11. The match-up was originally scheduled to be a doubleheader but morning showers allowed for just one game to be played. The two teams will instead play a doubleheader tomorrow.
VMI took a 3-0 lead by the end of the third before Brown rebounded in the top of the fourth, tying the game 3-3. Junior James Lowe led-off the inning with a single and later scored on an error. Another error by the Keydets scored Brown's second run of the inning. Junior Bobby Wiginton singled home the game-tying run later on in the frame.
The Keydets quickly responded in the bottom half of the fourth, scoring six runs to take the lead for good. The Bears scored a run in the fifth but VMI tacked on three more runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 12-4 advantage.
Brown recorded three runs in the eighth for the 12-7 final. Junior James Lowe began the rally with a double followed by an RBI single by sophomore Danny Hughes. After sophomore Paul Christian singled, freshman Devin Thomas continued the string of hits with a single of his own that brought home Hughes. The Bears final run was driven in by freshman Robert Dykehouse.
On the mound, senior Sam Jennings suffered the loss. Lowe went 2-4 from the plate with two runs scored while Hughes went 1-2 with a run batted in. Wiginton finished 2-5 with one RBI.
The Bears continue action against VMI tomorrow, beginning at noon.
