ELON, NC - In the first of a two-game weekday series, the Brown baseball team fell 13-6 to Elon University on Tuesday afternoon.
Senior Shaun Gallagher (West Chester, PA), who was named the Ivy League Player of the Week on Tuesday, continued to crush opposing pitching as he went 3 for 4 with two doubles and three RBIs.
Freshman Jeff Nichols (Medford, NJ) extended his hitting streak to seven games going 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI. Sophomore Rob Deeb (West St. Paul, MN) went 2 for 5 with an RBI triple and a double and senior Rick Lynn (Towaco, NJ) went 2 for 3 with two stolen bases for the Bears.
The Bears (6-7) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Deeb led off the game with a double to left field, and later scored on Gallagher's RBI double to center.
Elon came back with two runs in both the second and third innings to take a 4-1 lead. However, the crushing blow came in the bottom of the sixth, when Elon put up eight runs to move out in front 12-1. The Phoenix would also go on to add another run in the bottom of the eighth.
Brown added two runs in the top of the seventh and three runs in the top of the ninth to make the final score 13-6.
Junior pitcher Dan Spring (Washington, D.C.) took the loss on the hill for the Bears as he went five and a third innings, giving up seven earned runs on nine hits while striking out two. Junior Justin Lebowitz (Aberdeen, NJ) threw two innings for the Bears, giving up one run on three hits.
Brown returns to action for another game at Elon on Wednesday, March 27. The first pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
