Bears Comeback Falls Just Short In 7-6 Loss To VMI

Lexington, VA - VMI built up an early 5-0 lead but Brown was just 90 feet away from getting the tying run across the plate in the top of ninth in a tough 7-6 loss for the Bears in Lexington, VA on Sunday. After the second homerun of the day by senior Paul Christian and a pinch-hit double by sophomore J.J. Eno, junior Devin Thomas advanced Eno over to third with a single but the Keydets were able to get the final two outs in the ninth, holding off Brown, which remainless winless on the year with a 0-7 record.
Christian drove in four of Brown's six runs on the day with his two homeruns on the day, moving him into a tie for second place on Brown's all-time homeruns list with 27.
Christian's three-run homer in the seventh cut the lead to one, 5-4, as junior Bryan Tews settled down on the mound, allowing just two hits total and no runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
Freshman Matt Nuzzo drove in the tying run in the top of the eighth with a single to right field but VMI rallied for two runs in the bottom of the inning, which proved to be enough for the victory.
Sophomore Jeff Dietz, freshman Robert Papenhouse, Thomas and Nuzzo all posted two hits on the day in addition to Christian's two. With the DH rule not in effect, Tews went 1-4 with a double at the plate while on the mound, he allowed four earned runs in seven innings with four strikeouts. Sophomore Rob Hallberg suffered the loss on the mound, giving up the go-ahead runs in the eighth.
The final game between Brown and VMI will now be played at 2 p.m. on Monday.
