Asheville, NC - The Brown baseball team defeated UNC-Asheville 8-4 on Saturday, taking the three-game series 2-1. The Bears, now 3-8 on the season, spilt a doubleheader with the Bulldogs yesterday. On the strength of 14 hits, Brown got one run in the first, two in the second, four in the fifth another in the seventh for the four-run victory. Junior right-hander Shaun McNamara limited the Bulldogs to just two runs in the fourth and seventh innings as he picked up his second win of the season. Kutler scored senior Bobby Wiginton on a fielder's choice to give Brown an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. The duo went on to hammer out solo homeruns in the third, giving the Bears a 3-0 advantage. Wiginton finished the game 2-5 at the plate with two runs scored and two runs driven in.
The Bulldogs struck for a pair of runs in the fourth with a two-run shot to make it a one-run game, 3-2, but Brown responded to the pressure with a big four-run fifth to put the game in the bag.
Kutler recorded his second homer of the game to start things off. After junior Eric Larson singled and stole second, junior Danny Hughes doubled to left field, easily scoring Larson. After a walk by junior Paul Christian and a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Devin Thomas, senior Jimmy Lowe sent in two runs with a rip down the leftfield line.
