WILMINGTON, NC - The Brown baseball team dropped a 9-4 decision to the UNC Wilmington Seahawks in the first game of a three-game series between the two teams on Saturday at Brooks Field.
Brown fell behind early in the game when UNCW scored five runs with two outs in the bottom half of the third inning to take a 5-0 lead.
The Bears fought back with a run in the top of the fourth when sophomore Rob Deeb (West St. Paul, MN) slapped a double down the left field line, advanced to third on sophomore Matt Kutler's (Omaha, NE) ground out, and scored on an RBI single by senior first baseman Shaun Gallagher (West Chester, PA).
Brown scored another run in the top of the fifth to pull within four runs of the Seahawks at 6-2, but UNCW plated three more runs in the bottom of the inning to jump out to a 9-2 advantage. The Bears pushed across one run in both the seventh and eighth innings to close the gap to 9-4.
Senior southpaw John Cappello (Cranston, RI) got the start on the hill for the Bears and went five innings, giving up five earned runs on nine hits while striking out two. Fellow senior Bryant Romo (Arcadia, CA) came on for the last three innings and held the Seahawks scoreless, allowing two hits and striking out two batters.
Sophomore shortstop John Magaletti (Scarsdale, NY) paced the Bears offensively as he went 2-4 with two RBIs. Kutler also continued to swing a hot bat, as he went 2-4 on the afternoon. Deeb and freshman Jeff Nichols (Medford, NJ) each added a double for the Bears.
With the loss, the Bears fall to a record of 5-4 and will return to action on Sunday, March 24 for a doubleheader at UNC Wilmington.
