THIBODAUX, La. – Junior Mark Sluys (Gig Harbor, Wash.) racked up three hits, but the Brown baseball team fell at Nicholls State, 3-1, to close out the three-game series Sunday afternoon at Ray E. Didier Field.
Nicholls improves to 7-5 on the season, while Brown moves to 0-3 overall.
Sluys went 3-for-3 with a double on Sunday and finished the three-game set with a 7-for-11 (.636) showing at the plate. Senior Max Ritchie (Woodbridge, Conn.) went 6.2 innings on the mound, allowing three runs with one strikeout, while rookie Will Tomlinson (Irvine, Calif.) came in for 1.1 innings of hitless work to go along with two strikeouts.
Mike Hanchar picked up the win for the Colonels with one unearned run over 5.1 innings, before Jarred Scott earned the save.
After two scoreless innings, Nicholls jumped on the board in the bottom of the third, as Gavin Wehby drove in Ethan Valdez with a sacrifice fly to left field.
Brown evened the score in the top of the fifth as Sluys crossed the plate on an error with two outs, but the Colonels rebounded in the bottom side when Joey Morales scored on a groundout, pushing the home side in front, 2-1.
Nicholls added an insurance run in the seventh and held the Bears to two hits over the final four innings to secure the series sweep.
Brown will visit No. 15 Texas A&M for a three-game series next weekend.
