STORRS, Conn. – Junior Dan Kerr (Westfield, N.J.) and freshman Joshua Huntley (Aurora, Colo.) registered two hits apiece, but the Brown baseball team fell to Connecticut, 7-4, in non-conference play Wednesday afternoon at J.O. Christian Field.
Brown moved to 6-15 on the season, while the Huskies improved to 15-16 overall.
Five players tossed at least one inning for the Bears, capped by juniors Taylor Wright (Berwyn, Pa.) and Chris Smith (Colleyville, Texas), who combined for three scoreless innings. Max Slade earned the win for the Huskies before David Mahoney closed out the final frame for the save.
Connecticut jumped out to an early lead with three runs on a pair of hits in the bottom of the first inning, and then added two more in the third for the advantage, 5-0.
The Bears answered back in the fifth, when sophomore Noah Shulman (Merrick, N.Y.) hit a one-out single and rookie Robert Henry (Cranston, R.I.) drew a walk to put two runners on base. Senior J.J. Franco (New York, N.Y.) followed with a one-run single to left field to put the Bears on the board. After another single by Kerr, Huntley hit the team's third straight single to drive in Henry and trim the deficit to three, 5-2.
After UConn responded with one run in the bottom half of the frame, the Bears added two more runs in the sixth. With the bases loaded and no outs, Shulman and Henry drove in two runs on consecutive groundouts to pull the visitors within three, but the UConn bullpen held the Bears hitless over the final three innings to seal the victory.
The Bears return to Ivy action on Saturday, April 12 when they kick off a four-game weekend set at Harvard. The first game of the doubleheader on Saturday will start at 1 p.m.
