PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Freshman Robert Henry (Cranston, R.I.) collected five hits and senior Wes Van Boom (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) and junior Dan Kerr (Westfield, N.J.) drove in three runs apiece as the Brown baseball team swept a doubleheader against Siena, 14-7 and 4-3, in Thursday's non-conference home opener at Murray Stadium.
Brown moves to 6-10 on the season, while Siena drops to 5-20 overall.
In the first game, the Bears combined for 15 runs in the contest, highlighted by a seven-run sixth inning. Henry and senior J.J. Franco (New York, N.Y.) recorded three hits each, while Van Boom, senior Daniel Massey (Greensboro, N.C.) and freshman Joshua Huntley (Aurora, Colo.) posted two hits apiece.
Freshman Max Ritchie (Woodbridge, Conn.) closed out the final 1.1 innings in scoreless fashion to earn the win, including a pair of strikeouts.
Brown jumped on the board with two runs in the first, as junior Will Marcal (Lexington, Mass.) and Huntley drove in back-to-back runs to give the Bears the early lead. After Siena responded with a pair in the second to even the score, the Bears kept up the offensive attack in the bottom half of the frame with a sacrifice fly from Van Boom to take the lead, 3-2.
The Bears added two more runs in the third, taking advantage of an error and a wild pitch to build a three-run advantage, but the Saints came back with a pair in the top of the fourth to trim the deficit to one, 5-4. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the inning, the Bears scored again on an error and a passed ball to move out in front, 7-4.
Siena continued to battle back, however, with two in the fifth and one in the sixth to even the score at 7-7.
Brown broke it open with seven runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a commanding seven-run lead. After Franco hit an RBI triple to right center and Marcal and Marc Sredojevic Mendham, N.J.) followed with a pair of RBI singles, Massey singled to right to put two men on base. From there, Kerr and Van Boom hit back-to-back home runs to lift the Bears in front, 14-7, and secure the victory.
In the second game, Henry went 2-for-4 at the plate and scored a run. Junior Chris Smith (Colleyville, Texas) punched out four batters in four innings of relief work to earn the win, while junior Taylor Wright (Berwyn, Pa.) registered the last three outs to pick up the save.
Once again, Brown struck first with a run in the opening frame, as Henry led off with a single and worked his way around the bases before scoring on a passed ball. Siena answered right back with a run off a wild pitch in the second to tie it up at 1-1.
Brown added two more runs in the second to regain the lead, as Nick Fornaca (San Diego, Calif.) sent in Massey with a sacrifice fly and Henry hit a one-run single to right for the 3-1 advantage. The Bears tacked on another tally in the third, when Van Boom singled down the left field line.
With a four-run lead, the Bears held off the Saints until the top of the seventh, when the visitors made it interesting with a pair of runs to cut the lead to one, 4-3. Nevertheless, Wright forced a final fly-out with two runners in scoring position to stave off the comeback and seal the win.
The Bears return to action on Saturday, April 5 when they host a doubleheader against Princeton. The first game is set to start at noon.
