PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Tim McKeithan (Arden, N.C.) hit a one-run single in the sixth inning to snap a 7-7 tie and push the Brown baseball team to a 10-7 victory over Marist in game one, and Anthony Galan (Watchung, N.J.) pitched the full seven innings in a 4-3 game one win on Wednesday at Murray Stadium.
Brown improved to 7-32 overall, while Marist dropped to 22-19-1 on the season.
Galan pitched all seven innings in the first game to pick up the win, allowing just three runs with six strikeouts, while Evan Davis took the loss. Cody Slaughter (New Port Richey, Fla.) collected a pair of hits and Wes Van Boom (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) drove in a trio of runs.
After Marist opened the contest with a lone run in the top of the first, the Bears answered right back with four runs on two hits in the bottom half of the frame. Jake Levine (Newton, Mass.) and McKeithan started it off with consecutive walks before Will Marcal (Lexington, Mass.) reached on an error to load the bases. Van Boom followed with a bases-clearing double to center field, driving in all three runs for the two-run lead. One batter later, Slaughter singled to drive in Van Boom and give the home team the 4-1 lead.
Marist scored another run in the top of the fourth when Zach Passerelle smacked a single through the right side, driving in Nick McQuail to trim the deficit to two, 4-2.
The Red Foxes continued to chip away with another run in the fifth as Matt Pagano singled up the middle to pull the visitors within one, 4-3, but Galan shut down the final seven batters in order to seal the victory.
Levine went 3-for-3 at the plate with one walk in the second game, and Marcal registered two hits and drove in four runs. McKeithan and Dan Kerr (Westfield, N.J.) collected two hits apiece, while Eddie Fitzpatrick (North Attleboro, Mass.) finished off the final five batters to earn the win in relief.
The Red Foxes threatened for multiple runs in the first but only managed one off a wild pitch as starter Lucas Whitehill (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) punched out the side to hold the visitors to a 1-0 lead.
Marist added another run in the second as Joey Aiola recorded a one-run single through the left side to pad the lead at 2-0.
Brown countered in the third frame with four runs on four hits to take a two-run advantage. Levine led off with a walk, before McKeithan crushed an RBI double to left, Marcal smacked a one-run triple to deep right and Van Boom hit an RBI single down the right field line. After Kerr doubled to deep center for the team's fourth straight hit, Slaughter sent in Van Boom on a ground out to third, pushing the home side on top, 4-2.
The Bears kept it going in the fourth with three more runs, highlighted by Van Boom's sacrifice fly and an RBI single through the right side by Kerr, giving the home the team the 7-2 lead.
Marist continued to chip away, however, scoring two runs in the fifth and three runs in the sixth to even the score at 7-7.
Brown responded in the bottom half of the sixth when Levine led off the inning with a triple to center, followed by McKeithan's RBI single for the one-run advantage. From there, Marcal stepped in for a two-run homer over the right field fence for the three-run lead before Fitzpatrick finished out the seventh to preserve the victory.
The Bears wrap up the season on Thursday, May 2 when they host intrastate rival Rhode Island at 3:30 p.m.
