Baseball Falls to Bryant, 11-4, in Home Opener

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Despite taking a 4-3 lead into the sixth inning, the Brown baseball team could not hold off intrastate rival Bryant University as the Bears fell to the Bulldogs, 11-4, in the team's home opener Thursday afternoon at Murray Stadium.

With the loss, the Bears drop to 2-16 on the season, while the Bulldogs improve to 15-9-1 overall.

Junior Daniel Massey (Greensboro, N.C.) and sophomore Will Marcal (Lexington, Mass.) led the Bears with two hits apiece, while Massey also drove in a pair of runs. Junior Wes Van Boom (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) drove in the other two runs for the home side.

Joseph Michaud went six innings on the hill for the Bulldogs to earn the win, allowing four runs with nine strikeouts, while Austin French (Orange, Conn.) took the loss.

Bryant opened the contest with three runs in the top of the first as Carl Anderson started it off with an RBI single up the middle and Dan Muscatello followed with a two-out single to center to drive in a pair for the 3-0 lead.

Brown answered right back in the bottom half of the frame as Van Boom doubled with two outs to deep left field, driving in Marcal and Cody Slaughter (New Port Richey, Fla.) to trim the deficit to 3-2.

After Marcal singled to left with one out in the bottom of the second, the Bears took the lead when Massey crushed a two-run shot over the right field fence to push the home side on top, 4-3.

Both offenses were held at bay for a few innings, until Bryant evened up the score in the sixth when Dan St. George hit a sacrifice fly to left, tying the game at 4-4.

The Bulldogs scored six more runs on five hits in the top of the seventh to pad their lead before adding one more tally in the ninth to seal the victory.

The Bears return to Ivy League action on Saturday, April 6 when they play host to Penn for a doubleheader at noon.
