Brown Drops 4-1 Decision to Nicholls State

BATON ROUGE, LOUISIANA – The Brown baseball team (1-3) played the final game of its opening road trip this morning, falling 4-1 to Nicholls State (7-5). The Bears faced stiff competition in their first games of the 2013 season, battling to one impressive win and three competitive losses.

The Colonels got on the board quickly, taking a 1-0 lead over the Bears at the top of the first. Batting with one out, Nicholls' Mike Barba hit a single to third base, setting himself up to advance to third on a drive down the middle by Philip Lyons. With two on, Keith Cormier hit a sacrifice fly to left field, bring Barba home for the Colonels' first run of the morning.

Nicholls built on its lead in the second, scoring three more runs to go up on Brown, 4-0, in the early innings of the game. Tyler Duplantis was up first for the Colonels, bunting and then advancing to second on a wild pitch. David Zorn walked, and then Cody Dufrene bunted, loading the bases as Ray Eureste headed to the plate. He reached base on a fielder's choice, as sophomore third baseman Nick Fornaca (San Diego, CA) threw to junior Wes Van Boom (Trabuca Canyon, CA) to get Duplantis out at home. With the bases still loaded, Matt Richard doubled down the left field line, bringing all three runners home and boosting Nicholls' edge to four.

Neither team scored in the third inning, but the Bears got one back in the fourth. Sophomore Will Marcal (Lexington, MA), batting first, hit a single to left field, and Van Boom reached base on a fielding error by the Colonels' shortstop, advancing Marcal to second. Both runners took a base on a wild pitch, and then senior Cody Slaughter (New Port Richey, FL) singled into right field, bring Marcal home and narrowing the gap to 4-1.

The score remained unchanged through the next five innings, giving Nicholls the win over Brown. Marcal, Slaughter, Fornaca, freshman Tim McKeithan (Arden, NC) and senior John Sheridan (Palo Alto, CA) all had one hit for the Bears, while Van Boom led the defense with 10 putouts.

Five different pitchers saw action on the mound over the course of the game, led by starter Kevin Carlow (Mystic, CT) who earned the loss. In seven innings pitched, the senior gave up seven hits, four runs, four earned runs and two walks while also throwing seven strikeouts. Sophomore Eddie Fitzpatrick (North Attleboro, MA) pitched two strikeouts in his one inning on the mound, while sophomore Chris Smith (Colleyville, TX), freshman Austin French (Orange, CT) and sophomore Taylor Wright (Berwyn, PA) also appeared in relief.

The Bears head to Alabama next weekend, playing three games against the Auburn Tigers. Brown will compete at 7:00pm on Friday, March 8, at 5:00pm on Saturday, March 9 and at 2:00pm on Sunday, March 10.
