PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown baseball split a doubleheader with Yale on Friday afternoon at Murray Stadium, the first of a two-game set of home-and-home series, getting an impressive pitching performance from sophomore starter Anthony Galan (Watchung, N.J.) who went 8.2 innings, striking out 10 batters to put the Bears in a position to win, eventually getting a 2-1 triumph on a bases-loaded walk. Brown appeared poised to sweep the Bulldogs, but Yale's late rally in game two gave them a 10-8 victory.
In game one, Brown (9-31, 6-12) was able to load the bases in the ninth frame of a seven-inning game, and sophomore J.J. Franco (New York, N.Y.) was able to work the walk to give the Bears the walk-off win over Yale (11-31-1, 3-15).
Franco was responsible for both Bruno runs as his RBI single in the third inning gave the Bears a 1-0 lead.
Galan was sensational, scattering eight hits over eight-plus frames, while striking out 10 Bulldogs and walking just four. The second-year starter limited Yale all day and put Bruno in the position to take the victory.
In game two, the Brown offense came out hot, plating five runs in the first frame and at least one run in each of the first three innings to take an early 7-3 lead.
Brown held the lead into the ninth inning despite a three-run sixth inning by the Bulldogs, but Yale continued to hit, getting another run in the seventh to close within two runs.
Yale second baseman Jacob Turner took care of the rest as his three-run home run in the ninth inning put the Bulldogs up 10-8. Turner finished game two 4-for-6 with two runs and six RBI.
Rookie Will Marcal (Lexington, Mass.) led the way for Brown in the second game, going 3-for-5 with a run, two RBI and two doubles.
Brown finishes its four-game set at Yale tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. The Bears return to Murray Stadium to close out their home schedule in a doubleheader versus Marist at 2 p.m., next Tuesday.
