Pacific’s Pitching Pushes Tigers Past Brown in Doubleheader

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown began its eight-game California road trip on Saturday with a doubleheader against the Pacific Tigers on Saturday, but were topped, 10-0 and 11-4. Pacific got two superb pitching performances from Michael Benson and Kyle Crawford. Benson spun a complete-game six-hitter while Crawford went 8.1 innings for the win.

Brown was able to tally 16 hits in two games but were only able to get on the scoreboard in game two as John Sheridan (Palo Alto, Calif.), Cody Slaughter (New Port Richey, Fla.), Lucas Whitehill (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and Matt DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J.) each tallied an RBI.

In game one it was all Pacific as Benson was locked in, shutting out the Bears while striking out six and walking none. The Tiger offense totaled 10 runs on 17 hits.

Sophomore second baseman J.J. Franco (New York, N.Y.) went 2-for-3 against the Tigers ace, but Brown could not find a way to cross a run in first contest.

The Pacific offense continued to roll in game two, tallying six runs in the second inning and four more in third.

Brown got three back in the top of the fourth on RBI singles from Slaughter, Whitehill and DeRenzi, but that was as close at the Bears would get.

The Bears are back in action tomorrow with a second doubleheader against the Tigers beginning at 1 p.m., PST.
