PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The 2011 Capital One Academic All-District softball teams, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), have been released to recognize the nation's top student-athletes for the their combined performance on the field and in the classroom. Sophomore pitcher Heath Mayo (Whitehouse, Texas) was a second team selection for District I.
This season's Team MVP, Mayo led the Bears with a 3.06 ERA and a 3-1 record. The second-year pitcher made 12 appearances, starting six games. He finished with three complete games and a shutout. Even though Mayo struck out only 22 batters in 53.0 innings, his side-arm style allowed him to limit opponents to just 18 earned runs this season, while not giving up a home run.
Mayo, a political science and economics major, boasts a sterling 4.00 GPA.
