Brown Edged by Bryant, 5-4

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Coming off a close victory over URI on Tuesday, Brown hosted its second-straight Rhode Island opponent in Bryant. The Bears jumped out to an early 3-0 lead and led entering the ninth inning, but the Bulldogs were able to plate three runs in the final frame on their way to a 5-4 victory.

After three-straight innings without a run, Brown (9-27) started off the scoring with a big fourth inning. Senior captain Matt Colantonio (Garden City, N.Y.) started it off with a bunt single. After Ryan Zrenda (Old Lyme, Conn.) was hit a by a pitch, junior DH Mike DiBiase (Weston, Mass.) belted a double to left field, which put the Bears up 2-0.

Brown added to its lead, loading the bases in the fame and then getting a walk from rookie Matt DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J.) that pushed DiBiase across and put Bruno up 3-0.

Bryant (21-19) quickly responded however, plating two runs in the top of the fifth inning. The Bulldogs got an RBI double from David Soltis and then a RBI single from Kevin Brown to cut the Brown lead to just one.

Sophomore pitcher Will Lacker (Brookline, Mass.) entered the game in relief for the Bears during the second inning and went 6.2 strong innings, giving up just three hits while striking out two.

The Bears were able to tack on an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning on a RBI double from senior Josh Feit (Woodcliff Lake, N.J.), but it did not prove to be enough. 

A two-run double and a RBI on a fielder's choice from the Bulldog offense put Bryant up 5-4 in the ninth and final inning. Pitcher Salvatore Lisanti made sure the score would stand, retiring the side in order to secure the win for Bryant. 

Brown plays its final Ivy League series of the year this weekend as the Bears head to Yale on Friday for two, before hosting the Bulldogs for two more on Saturday.
