Santa Clara, Calif. – The Brown baseball team jumped out to an early 3-0 lead against Santa Clara, but the Bronco bats came alive in the fifth inning, scoring five runs in the sixth inning. SCU added one more in the seventh and two more in the eighth to take an 8-3 win in the first of a four-game series.
Junior DH Mike DiBiase (Weston, Mass.) continued his hot hitting as of late, going 2-for-4 with two singles. Senior first baseman Pete Greskoff (Paoli, Pa.) was 1-for-4 on the day with a run and a RBI.
Greskoff started off the game's scoring in the top of the fourth inning when he singled to center field to plate Matt Colantonio (Garden City, N.Y.) who had doubled to right to put a runner in scoring position for Greskoff.
After a DiBiase single, senior Ryan Zrenda (Old Lyme, Conn.) belted the second double of the fourth inning for the Bears to pick up a RBI and a 2-0 Brown lead.
Brown made a 3-0 lead in the fifth. Junior Graham Tyler (Cranston, R.I.) led off the frame with a double to left and then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by freshman J.J. Franco (New York, N.Y.). Rookie Matt DiRenzi (Mendham, N.J.) came through with an RBI single.
The Santa Clara offense came alive in the fifth inning with four hits, which with the help of two errors led to five runs and a 5-3 lead for the Broncos.
SCU kept it going to end the game as they added two runs in the seventh and one more in the eighth to put Brown up against five run deficit, which the Bears could not come back from.
The Broncos and Bears will now play a doubleheader on Sunday starting at 4 p.m. EST.
