First Annual Home Runs for the Homeless Derby Postponed Until April 11

Providence, RI- Due to poor weather conditions predicted for tomorrow, the Brown University baseball/softball team's First Annual Home Runs for the Homeless Derby scheduled for tomorrow from 3:30-6:00 p.m. at Murray Stadium has been rescheduled for April 11.

This past fall, the Brown University softball and baseball teams began volunteering with Judy's Kindness Kitchen to help serve and prepare food for the Providence homeless. Each year approximately 3.5 million Americans experience homelessness, 1.35 million of them children; and though Rhode Island may be small, the problems its citizens face when it comes to finding safe and adequate housing are still daunting.

Crossroads Rhode Island, the largest homeless services organization in the state, offers general aid and assistance to those in the Providence area; however, no meals are served on Sundays. Instead, Judy's Kindness Kitchen steps up to provide those in need with warm, nourishing meals. To date, the Brown softball and baseball teams have helped Judy's serve over 1,750 sandwiches and 1,000 cups of soup since teaming up with their organization.

Part of Judy's mission is to secure funding and a broad volunteer commitment to assure sustainability over the long-term. Last year the baseball and softball teams hit 80 home runs combined, and this year we are using that power to give back to our community. To support Judy's efforts, we are starting the Home Runs for the Homeless campaign.
