Brown Launches Home Runs for the Homeless Campaign

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - This past fall, the Brown University softball and baseball teams began volunteering with Judy's Kindness Kitchen to help serve and prepare food for the Providence homeless. Each year approximately 3.5 million Americans experience homelessness, 1.35 million of them children; and though Rhode Island may be small, the problems its citizens face when it comes to finding safe and adequate housing are still daunting.

Crossroads Rhode Island, the largest homeless services organization in the state, offers general aid and assistance to those in the Providence area; however, no meals are served on Sundays. Instead, Judy's Kindness Kitchen steps up to provide those in need with warm, nourishing meals. To date, the Brown softball and baseball teams have helped Judy's serve over 1,750 sandwiches and 1,000 cups of soup since teaming up with their organization.

Part of Judy's mission is to secure funding and a broad volunteer commitment to assure sustainability over the long-term. Last year the baseball and softball teams hit 80 home runs combined, and this year we are using that power to give back to our community. To support Judy's efforts, we are starting the Home Runs for the Homeless campaign.

The baseball and softball team are hosting the First Annual Home Runs for the Homeless Derby as a kickoff event to announce their commitment to charity. The home run derby will take place on Monday, March 21st at Murray Stadium from 3:30 – 6:00 pm. This is a chance for students and members of the Brown community to come out, show their support, and swing for the fence. Participants will acquire sponsors who pledge to donate a certain amount of money per home run or as a flat sum. All proceeds from this event will go to Judy's Kindness Kitchen.

We are also reaching out to our friends, family, and alumni by asking them to make pledges for each home run that the baseball and softball teams hit this upcoming spring season; or if you would like to make a flat donation, every little bit counts. We will keep you updated over the course of the season and post stats so you can see how our teams are doing. At the end of the season, once our home runs are tallied up, you can mail your check made out to Judy's Kindness Kitchen to the following address:
