PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown senior pitcher Matthew Kimball (Nashville, Tenn.) started the 2011 Bears Baseball season off in impressive fashion, returning to his hometown and taking on the No. 2 team in the country. For his efforts, Kimball was named Ivy League Pitcher of the Week.
The Brown baseball team opened its schedule on Friday against the No. 2 team in the nation, Vanderbilt (11-1). The Bears (0-3) got seven strong innings from Kimball who was impressive in his homecoming performance, limiting the Commodores to just one run, but a two-run eighth inning gave the win to Vandy, 3-1.
Not only did Kimball and the Bears face one of the top teams in the country, they also squared off against one of the top pitchers. Preseason All-American junior Sonny Gray, who has played for Team USA, set a career-high with 15 strikeouts in a complete game performance.
Kimball went toe-to-toe with Gray as the two dueled to a 1-1 tie until the eighth inning. The fourth-year right-handed pitcher went seven strong, scattering six hits while striking out three.
The Bears' schedule does not get any easier as the team travels to Austin, Texas, to take on the No. 5 Longhorns in a four-game set this weekend.
