Bears Finish USCSA National Championships in Seventh

WINTER PARK, CO - The Brown women's skiing team finished the 2007 USCSA National Championships in seventh place with a total of 13 points, after finishing the Giant Slalom in eighth and the Slalom in fifth.

In Wednesday's Giant Slalom, Brown was led by senior Kelly O'Hear (Niagara Falls, NY), who finished in 13th place with a time of 2:13.38, less than one second out of eighth place and less than two seconds behind second place. She actually made a huge mistake in the first run and was in 23rd place after that run. However, she skied the fastest time in the second run to move up to 13th place, earning All-America honors. Sophomore Sophie Elgort (New York, NY) was next for Brown in 38th with a time of 2:22.77, while freshman Elisa Handbury (Sydney, Australia) finished in 43rd with a two-run time of 2:24.33.

In Friday's Slalom, O'Hear again led Brown with a time of 1:38.98, good for sixth place overall and All-America status in the Slalom as well. Handbury clocked in at 1:43.21 to finish in 18th place, while sophomore Anna Bengtson (St. Johnsbury, VT) finished in 24th with a time of 1:44.83. Elgort was also in the top 35, skiing a 1:48.23, good for 32nd place.

In addition to earning All-America honors in both the Slalom and the Giant Slalom, O'Hear also earned combined All-America status.

Brown also had five Academic All-Americans recognized, including O'Hear, junior Mallory Taub (Waitsfield, VT), junior Meaghan Casey (Bristol, CT), Bengtson, and Elgort.
