The Brown University Women's Skiing Team finished fourth overall at the USCSA National Championships at Northstar in Tahoe this past week. The Bears finished fifth in the slalom with a total time of 332.90, and fifth in the giant slalom with a total time of 472.78.
The Bears were led by senior Doria DiBona (Waterville Valley, NH) and freshman Hilary Swaffield (Wolfeboro, NH) in the championships. Overall, DiBona led the Bears coming in tenth place as Swaffield was close behind in 13th.
DiBona grabbed a fifth place finish in the giant slalom with a total time of 2:29.98, and placed 21st in the slalom with a total time of 1:53.06. Swaffield skied her way to 15th in the slalom with a total time of 1:.72, and 19th in the giant slalom with a total time of 2:35.84.
Also helping the Bears on their way were senior Adrienne Jones (Bristol, VT) and freshmen Caitlin Stanton (Hanover, NH) and Stephanie Breakstone (Sparta, NJ). Jones led Brown in the slalom coming in 11th place with a total time of 1:49.12. Breakstone finished in 39th place in the slalom with a time of 1:57.97.
Stanton was the only other Brown skier to finish both the slalom and the giant slalom. She came in 46th in the giant slalom and 33rd in the slalom.
The Bears' outstanding performance at the USCSA National Championships have earned them post-season honors. Overall DiBona and Swaffield were both Second Team All-American selections as Breakstone and Jones were Honrable Mentions. In the giant slalom DiBona was First Team and Swaffield was Second Team All-American. Swaffield was also a Second Team All-American selection in the slalom as was Jones.
The Bears finished behind three other schools, two of which they competed against during the regular season. Finishing in the top spot was UMass, followed by Boston College and Sierra Nevada College.
