WATERVILLE VALLEY, NH - The Brown skiing team battled through some tough individual finishes in both the slalom and giant slalom, but still managed to earn a trip to the USCSA National Championships, tying for fourth place at the 2008 ECSC Regional Championships. The finish could have been lower, if not for extremely consistent runs in both the slalom and giant slalom from sophomore Elisa Handbury (Sydney, Australia) and senior Sophie Elgort (New York, NY). Overall, Brown tied for fourth with Plymouth State, as each team had one fourth place finish (Brown's in the giant slalom) and one fifth place finish (Brown's in the slalom) to earn nine points. Colby Sawyer won the title, sweeping both races, while UMass and Boston College tied for second place. Overall, freshman Krista Consiglio (Bethany, CT) finished tied for ninth in the standings, while junior Anna Bengtson (St. Johnsbury, VT) was 12th. Elgort and Handbury came in 14th and 17th, respectively, while freshman Blaine Martin (Salt Lake City, UT) finished in 22nd.
In Saturday's slalom, the Bears were set back after only two of the five skiers, Elgort and Handbury, finished clean runs. Elgort led Brown with a 16th place finish, earning a total time of 1:48.42, while Handbury was right behind in 17th place with a time of 1:49.26. Brown's third time to count in team standings was Bengtson's 1:49.77 (18th place), who crashed in her second run, recovered and still finished with a 54.27 in the second run.
In Sunday's giant slalom, the Bears rebounded and had three of its four skiers finish in the top 20. Consiglio took third place with a time of 2:06.66, while Elgort was 13th with a 2:10.40. Handbury also scored for Brown, coming in 16th with a time of 2:11.78. The Bears' fourth skier, Bengston, went down in her first run and was unable to finish.
Next up for Brown is the 2008 USCSA National Championships, to be held March 5-10 at Sunday River, ME.
