Brown Women's Skiers Win ECSC Regional Championships
For the first time in Brown Skiing history, the Bears won the Eastern Collegiate Ski Conference Regional Championships. Competing over the past two days at Waterville Valley Ski Resort, the Bears dominated their competition with victories in slalom, giant slalom and overall.
"I could not be more pleased with the squad's efforts. Throughout the season, the team has worked and waited for these results. Their yearlong efforts are starting to fall into place. Now, the team understands just how talented they are and what they can do," states Head Coach Karen Finocchio. "The team's efforts at Regionals could not be a better precursor for our National Championships."
Opening the series with slalom, the Bears crushed their competition securing the slalom victory by over three seconds. Leading the Bears, freshman Kelly O'Hear skied her best slalom of the season capturing the individual slalom title with a winning time of 1:32.46.
Coming off the tremendous slalom win, the Bears had unstoppable momentum going into giant slalom. In a repeat performance, the Bears dominated the field both with individual standings and team results. In an extremely fast second run course which nearly took out O'Hear, the women's team remained steadfast to secure the giant slalom title. The Bears took top individual results along with the team victory. Swaffield and DiBona earned top results for the Bears with a sixth and ninth. Stephanie Breakstone punched into the top 20 with solid second run skiing. Despite a first run mistake that sent Marley-Mauzy flying into the air, her second run determination secured a 24th.
At the series completion, Brown Women's Ski Team dominated the individual and team results. The squad took the Slalom, Giant Slalom and Overall Team ECSC Regional Championship Titles. On the individual side, Kelly O'Hear won the ECSC Regional Championship Individual Title. The entire squad placed in the top 25 individual standings with DiBona and Swaffield securing 4th and 6th. Breakstone and Marley-Mauzy were strong with 20th and 25th.
"This squad is just incredible. They are very talented skiers, but more importantly the support that they show for each other is what propels them towards success. They are a remarkable team," states Finocchio.
With their success at ECSC Regionals, the Bears move onto the USCSA National Championships hosted at Sugarloaf/USA (Carrabassett Valley, ME) from March 1-March 7.
