Bears Continue Early Success with Strong Performances at Plymouth State Carnival

WATERVILLE VALLEY, NH - The Brown women's skiing team continued its early success over the weekend at the Plymouth State Carnival with its second straight win in the Slalom and a second place finish in the giant slalom. The Bears fought through adversity at the Carnival, held at Waterville Valley, NH, coming through with the strong results without one of its top skiers, sophomore Kelly O'Hear (Niagara Falls, NY).
Brown took the Slalom with a total time of 299.92, nearly four seconds ahead of second place Plymouth State. UMass won the Giant Slalom, finishing with a total time of 201.28, while Brown took second with a time of 202.80, nearly three seconds ahead of third place Colby Sawyer.
Sophomore Nina DiBona (Waterville Valley, NH) led the Bears with a second place finish in both the Slalom (1:06.99) and the Giant Slalom (1:38.26). Junior Jamie Johnson (North Kingstown, RI) came through brilliantly in O'Hear's absence to finish fifth (1:40.19) in the Slalom, while junior Hilary Swaffield (Wolfeboro, NH) took ninth in the Slalom (1:41.47) and sixth in the Giant Slalom (1:08.01).
Freshman Meaghan Casey (Bristol, CT) continued her rookie success so far this season with a 12th place (1:44.71) finish in the Slalom. In the Giant Slalom, Brown was also led by junior Stephanie Breakstone (Sparta, NJ), who took fifth with a time of 1:07.80. Junior Caitlin Stanton (Hanover, NH) took ninth in the Giant Slalom with a time of 1:08.54, while sophomore Janet Marley-Mauzy (Westport, CT), who earned a 14th place (1:08.97) finish in the Giant Slalom. Freshman Mallory Taub (Waitsfield, VT) also had an excellent weekend for the Bears, taking 17th (1:45.94) in the Slalom and 16th (1:09.08) in the Giant Slalom.
The Bears continue action February 5-6 when they take part in the MIT/BROWN Carnival at Tenney Mountain, NH (MIT) on the 5th, and Loon Mountain, NH (Brown) on the 6th.
