Brown Skiers Pick Up First Win Of Season At Plymouth State Carnival

Waterville Valley, NH - The Brown ski team took back to the slopes this weekend at the Plymouth State Carnival in Waterville Valley, NH and came away with its first win of the season, taking first in the giant slalom. The Bears dominated with a total score of 199.88, a solid distance ahead of second place finisher UMass, which scored a 201.44.
Brown also had a strong showing in the slalom, finishing just behind Colby Sawyer, for second place. The Bears had five skiers place in the top 16 in the slalom and three in the top six in the giant slalom.
Freshman Kelly O'Hear (Port Colborne, ONT) had another tremendous weekend, winning the giant slalom race with a time of 1:05.00. O'Hear, who is ranked second in the individual league standings, won both the first and second runs to finish on top.
Fellow freshman Nina DiBona (Waterville Valley, NH) was another huge highlight for Brown as she placed fifth in the giant slalom with a time of 1:07.04. DiBona was the top fnisher for Brown in the slalom race, placing second overall with a time of 1:42.58.
Sophomore Hilary Swaffield (Wolfeboro, NH) placed sixth in the giant slalom with a time of 1:07.19 while sophomore Caitlin Stanton (Hanover, NH) had her best finish of the season, placing 14th with a time of 1:08.82.
The Bears got another strong performance from freshman Janet Marley-Mauzy (Westport, CT), who finished 22nd in the giant slalom with a time of 1:10.41. Junior Tara Tuny (New York, NY) had a strong 50th place finish, timing in at 1:22.22
Sophomore Stephanie Breakstone (Sparta, NJ) had the best run of her Brown career in the slalom, finishing tied for 11th with a time of 1:48.18. Senior captain Molly Sheinberg (Woddcliff Lake, NJ), who is just coming back from acl recovery, also placed in the top 15 with a time of 1:49.04, good for 13th overall in the slalom.
Brown had finishes of 15th and 16th from Swaffield and Marley-Mauzy respectively in the slalom. Swaffield timed in at 1:49.98 while Marley-Mauzy finished in 1:50.49.
In other slalom results, Stanton placed 25th overall with a time of 1:56.08, including a phenominal second run. Sophomore Casey Schwarz (Portsmouth, NH) finished 35th overall from a 95th place start in 2:03.84 while sophomore Jamie Johnson (North Kingstown, RI) placed 41st with a time of 2:16.09. Tuny went from a 96th start to a 47th place finish in 2:20.03
Brown returns to action next weekend as it will take on MIT in its own carival.
