PROVIDENCE, RI - The Brown University ski team opened the 2005 season with a first place finish at the UMass Carnival, winning both the slalom and the giant slalom. Sophomore Kelly O'Hear (Niagara Falls, NY) led the Bears with a third place finish in both events.
Brown won the giant slalom by seven seconds, crushing the rest of the competition as the following five teams which were all within two seconds of each other. The Bears were followed by UMass, Colby Sawyer, Plymouth State, and Smith.
In the slalom, Brown performed equally as well, finishing three seconds ahead of the rest of the field, where the next five teams were all within one second of each other. The Bears were followed by Plymouth State, Boston College, UMass, and Smith.
Individually, O'Hear was the top performer, taking third in both the slalom and the giant slalom. In the giant slalom, Brown's top finishers were junior Hilary Swaffield (Wolfeboro, NH) in 4th, sophomore Nina DiBona (Waterville Valley, NH) in 6th, junior Stephanie Breakstone (Sparta, NJ) in 9th, and junior Caitlin Stanton (Hanover, NH) in 12th.
In the slalom, O'Hear was followed by DiBona in 5th, Swaffield in 8th, and freshman Meaghan Casey (Bristol, CT) in 13th.
The Bears continue action next weekend, Saturday, January 22, and Sunday, January 23, at the Plymouth State Carnival at Waterville Valley.
