Skiing Takes Home Multiple MacConnell Division Honors, Wins Final Races of Regular Season

ANDOVER, N.H. – The Brown ski team won its third-straight carnival by recording victories in two slalom races at Blackwater/Proctor Academy on Saturday, Feb. 11 and Sunday, Feb. 12.  Following the races, the last of the regular season, senior Ali Gunesch (Sandy, Ore.) was named MacConnell Division Skier of the Year, repeating the honor as she was also named skier of the year in 2016. First-year head coach Alex Norden took home MacConnell Division Coach of the Year laurels.

In Saturday's event, seniors Natalie Pearl (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) and Gunesch finished in first and third, respectively, with Pearl posting a time of 1:32.54 and Gunesch turning in a mark of 1:33.00. Senior Sylvie Bertrand (Hanover, N.H.) and junior Lauren Stobierski (South Deerfield, Mass.) finished in the top-20, with times of 1:35.47 and 1:35.54, for 18th and 19th place, respectively.

The following day, Pearl placed second in the slalom with a time of 1:39.53. Gunesch came in 12th (1:40.89) while Bertrand turned in a 18th-place finished (1:42.10).

To end the regular season, Gunesch finished first overall in the division with Pearl in third. Stobierski and Bertrand also finished 11th and 13th, respectively, to round out the top-15. All four skiers were named All-MacConnell Division Team for their standing.

In addition to Gunesch earning skier of the year, she was also named to the MacConnell Division Sportsmanship Team.

The Bears will next compete in the USCSA Eastern Regional Championships at West Mountain in Queensbury, N.Y. on Saturday, Feb. 18 (slalom) and Sunday, Feb. 19 (giant slalom).
