Skiing Wins Slalom, Finishes Fourth in Giant Slalom at UConn Carnival

LUDLOW, Vt. – The five-time defending MacConnell Division Champion Brown ski team opened its 2017 season at the UConn Carnival on Thursday, Jan. 12 and Friday, Jan. 13 at Okemo Mountain.

Brown claimed the top spot overall on Thursday in the slalom, besting second-place Babson by over seven seconds. Senior Ali Gunesch (Sandy, Ore.) was the Bears' top finisher coming in third with a time of 1:42.86 while seniors Natalie Pearl (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) and Sylvie Bertrand (Hanover, N.H.) also had strong finishes in fifth (1:44.22) and sixth (1:44.73), respectively. Junior Lauren Stobierski (South Deerfield, Mass.) was Brown's fourth skier to finish in the top-20, placing 13th (1:46.46).

On Friday in the giant slalom, Stobierski led the team with a seventh-place showing with a time of 2:42.26. Pearl came in ninth with a mark of 2:42.91. Gunesch (16th-2:47.38) and senior Sarah Bell (Pittsburgh, Pa.) (21st-2:52.71) rounded out the Brown finishes for a fourth-place team finish.

The Bears will next race at West Mountain in Queensbury, N.Y. on Saturday, Jan. 21 and Sunday, Jan. 22.
