Women’s Skiing Wins USCSA Eastern Regional Championship for Second Straight Year

MT. ABRAM, MAINE – The Brown women's skiing team continued its undefeated season, winning both the giant slalom (Saturday) and the slalom (Sunday) at the 2013 USCSA Regional Championships to claim the Eastern Regional Title for the second consecutive year. Leading the way for Brown was sophomore Nika Mosenthal (Plymouth, MA), who finished second in the overall standings with 150 points after taking fourth in the giant slalom and winning the slalom. Junior Emma Leblanc (Darien, CT) took fourth overall, earning 90 points, with a fifth place finish in both the giant slalom and the slalom. Sophomore Amanda Engelhardt (Plymouth, NH) and junior Maria Mastanduno (Hanover, NH) also finished in the top 10 overall, earning 7th and 8th place (tie), respectively.

In Saturday's giant slalom, Brown won the title with a time of 5:14.94, nearly nine seconds faster than second-place Castleton State. Engelhardt led the way for the Bears, finishing in third place with a two-run time of 1:44.54. Mosenthal took fourth overall with a two-run time of 1:44.89, while Leblanc came in fifth overall with a total time of 1:45.51. Mastanduno and senior Catherine Stewart (Stratton, VT) were both inside the top 15 after their first runs, but did not finish their second runs.

In Sunday's slalom, all skiers were only able to complete one run due to conditions on the mountain. The Bears claimed the title with a team time of 2:30.85, nearly five full seconds ahead of second-place Castleton State. Mosenthal led the way, winning the event with a time of 49.51. Mastanduno took third overall with a time of 50.26, while Leblanc was the third skier to count in Brown's team score with a time of 51.08, good for fifth. Stewart (14th, 53.28) and Engelhardt (20th, 56.11) also finished their run, as all five skiers completed the race.

Brown continues action March 4-9 when it travels to Sun Valley, Idaho to participate in the 2013 USCSA Nationals.
