Skiing Wins Slalom; Takes 4th in Giant Slalom

GUNSTOCK MOUNTAIN/BLACKWATER MOUNTAIN – The Brown women's ski team picked up its second win of the 2011 season on Saturday afternoon, earning 1st place in the slalom held at Blackwater Mountain. The win came a day after the team took fourth place in the giant slalom, held at Gunstock Mountain. With the results, the Bears hold onto fourth place in the MacConnell Division with 27 points and two more regular season races. BC still leads the Division with 16 points, while Plymouth State (21 points), Colby Sawyer (24 points), and UMass (42 points) round out the top five. Brown was led by freshman Emma Leblanc (Darien, CT), who claimed 11th in the giant slalom and third in the slalom.

In Friday's giant slalom, the Bears were again plagued by aggressive skiing, as two of their top skiers, senior Krista Consiglio (Bethany, CT) and junior Kia Mosenthal (Plymouth, NH), both failed to finish their second runs. Consiglio had been in second after the first run, while Mosenthal was in 14th.

However, Brown's overall talent and depth helped the Bears finish in fourth place, as junior Emily Simmons (Buffalo, NY) had two strong runs to finish in 7th place overall with a time of 1:42.42. LeBlanc was second for the Bears, finishing in 11th with a total time of 1:43.08. Brown's next two skiers took 28th and 47th, as sophomore Catherine Stewart (Stratton, VT) finished with a time of 1:47.06 and sophomore Sasha Sassoon (London, England) completed both runs in a total time of 1:51.97. Rounding out the Bears' finishers was sophomore Andrea Radke (St. Louis Park, MN) in 48th (1:52.64) and freshman Ellen Richardson in 56th (1:57.68).

Brown was much more consistent across the board in Saturday's slalom with all nine skiers completing two clean runs and six of the Bears finishing in the top-30. LeBlanc led the way for Brown taking third overall (1:33.35), including posting the fastest time (47.47) in the second run. Mosenthal grabbed fourth for the Bears, finishing with a total time of 1:33.57, while Consiglio came in seventh overall with a total time of 1:33.88. Simmons had Brown's fourth time, earning 23rd with a two-run time of 1:37.34.

Radke and freshman Maria Mastanduno (Hanover, NH) were also strong in both runs, as Radke took 28th with a total time of 1:38.61 and Mastanduno rounded out the top 30 skiers with a two-run time of 1:38.75. Stewart finished in 38th overall with a total time of 1:42.13, while Sassoon earned 48th with a total time of 1:54.65. Richardson finished her runs with a total time of 1:46.81 to finish in 51st.

Brown closes out the regular season this weekend when it travels to Wildcat Mountain for the giant slalom on Saturday, February 5th and the slalom on Sunday, February 6th
