
GUNSTOCK, NH/BLACKWATER, NH - A week after taking ninth in the
giant slalom races at Waterville Valley due to several crashes, the
Brown women's skiing team rebounded with a win at Gunstock Mountain
on Friday, January 29th. The Bears raced again on Saturday, taking
fourth place in the slalom, which was held at Blackwater Mountain.
Following the weekend, Brown remains in fourth place in the overall
MacConnell Division standings with 28 points. Plymouth State leads
with 19 points and is following by Colby Sawyer (21) and BC
(23).
In Friday's giant slalom, the Bears had a total time of 259.33,
1.35 ahead of second place Plymouth State. Brown was dominant, with
two skiers finishing in the top five, and two more finishing in the
11-15 range. Sophomore Kia Mosenthal (Plymouth, NH) led the team
with a two-run time of 1:25.88 to finish in second place. He
second-run time of 42.19 actually led all skiers, while her total
time was just .07 behind the winner. Sophomore Emily Simmons
(Buffalo, NY) was second for the Bears, taking fifth place with a
two-run total of 1:26.39.
Junior Krista Consiglio (Bethany, CT) rounded out the scorers for
Brown in 11th place with a total time of 1:27.06. Freshman
Catherine Stewart (Stratton, VT) also had a strong day for the
Bears, taking 15th place with a two-run time of 1:28.47. Senior
Elisa Handbury (Sydney, Australia) also finished her race, earning
33rd with a total time of 1:30.96.
The Bears claimed fourth place in Saturday's slalom with a total
time of 276.58. Mosenthal was again Brown's top finisher, taking
fourth place with a total time of 1:30.71. Consiglio tied for 8th
place as the Bears' second finisher with a time of 1:31.86.
Handbury earned Brown's third-best time, 1:34.01, which was good
for 17th place. Simmons (25th place - 1:35.78), Stewart (31st place
- 1:37.14), and freshman Therice Morris (Raleigh, NC) (51st place -
1:57.44) also finished for the Bears.
Brown returns to action this weekend, February 6-7, when it takes
part in the BC/Brown Carnival to be held at Wildcat Mountain. Giant
slalom races are slated for Saturday, while the slalom is scheduled
for Sunday.
