MT. SUNAPEE, NH - The Brown women's skiing team opened its 2010 season with a strong showing at Mt. Sunapee, finishing second and first in a pair of giant slalom races, January 8th and 9th. After the weekend, the Bears lead the MacConnell Division with three points and are one point ahead of BC and four ahead of Colby Sawyer.
In Friday's race, the Bears had three skiers finish in the top 10 and four in the top 15 to earn a second place finish. Sophomore Kia Mosenthal (Plymouth, NH) led the way, taking third with a total time of 1:42.92, while classmate Emily Simmons (Buffalo, NY) was fifth with a two-run time of 1:43.98. Junior Krista Consiglio (Bethany, CT) rounded out the top-10 with a total time of 1:45.25. Freshman Catherine Stewart (Stratton, VT) claimed 15th place, earning a time of 1:46.91. Freshman Therice Morris (Raleigh, NC) also finished for the Bears, earning 52nd (2:01.34).
The Bears were even faster in Saturday's race, as the top three finishers were all in the top-five, while Brown's fourth finisher narrowly missed 10th place. Mosenthal led the way again, grabbing second place with a two-run time of 1:41.16. Consiglio came in fourth place with a time of 1:42.54, while Simmons was right behind her in fifth place (1:42.94). Stewart claimed 11th place, earning a two-run time of 1:45.38 and just missing a top-10 finish. Senior Elisa Handbury (Sydney, Australia) claimed 26th place with a two-run time of 1:48.81, while Morris earned 43rd with a two-run time of 1:57.92.
Brown returns to action this weekend, January 15-16, when it
takes part in a pair of slalom races at the UConn Carnival, which
will be held at Cranmore Mountain.
