The Bears earned two weekly ECAC honors as senior captain Amber Smith was named Gymnast of the Week and sophomore Sarah Durning was named this week's Coach's Award recipient. Smith and Durning helped led Brown to a 1-1 weekend dropping to Penn but rebounded and defeating West Chester.
Smith has competed in the all-around every meet and sets a great example for her teammates with her hard work ethic and determination. On Saturday at Penn, Smith hit all four events and had a season high 37.1 all-around. The next day against West Chester, Smith again competed all four events for the Bears, and not only had a solid meet, but earned Brown's top score on vault and a personal best, a 9.625.
After an recovering from ACL surgery eight months ago Durning rejoined the line-up this weekend for the first time this season. The loss of Durning was a huge for Brown as she had Brown's only 10.0 start value on vault and was the top scorer on that event in the meets she competed in last year. Durning's routine is a tough and she surprised everyone this weekend when she stepped up for her team and decided to try competing vault for the first time since her surgery. Durning earned Brown's top score with a 9.725 at UPenn, nearly hitting our school record of 9.775. The next day, she again vaulted for the Bears and earned a 9.55.
Smith, During and the Bears will compete in their final home meet of the year this Sunday, March 19 when they take on Southern Connecticut, Yale and URI for a 1:00 p.m. start.
