Gymnastics Tumbles Past Penn, Bridgeport, and Brockport

The Brown women's gymnastics team improved its record to 7-4 on the season with a 187.50-185.775 victory over Penn, a 187.50-184.075 victory over Bridgeport, and a 187.50-177.65 victory over Brockport on Sunday afternoon at the Pizzitola Center. Junior Jayne Finst (Delray Beach, FL) led the way for the Bears, winning three of the four events in addition to the individual all-around, while classmate Gina Verge (Scituate, MA) placed second on two events in addition to a third place finish in the all-around.
Brown opened up competition on the vault as Finst led all gymnasts with a season-high 9.700, tying for first with Laura Bouchelle of Penn. Penn's Emily Petkun grabbed third place with a 9.650. Brown freshmen Amber Smith (Fort Myers, FL) and Jessica McNell (Darien, CT) tied for fourth (9.625), as they rounded out the top-five finishers.
On the bars, Brown grabbed a 1-2-3 sweep as Finst scored a season-high 9.725 to lead all gymnasts. Verge placed second with a 9.575 and freshman Sarah Cavett (Chattanooga, TN) gabbed third place with a 9.500. Leah Moon, of Penn finished in fourth with a 9.375, while teammate Petkun scored a 9.350 to round out the top-five finishers.
Brown completed a 1-2 sweep on the beam, as Finst and sophomore Melissa Forziat (Garden City, NY) led the Bears. Finst won with a 9.650, while Forziat scored a 9.600, good for second place. Joey Kochanski of Bridgeport took third with a 9.550, while Moon grabbed fourth with a 9.475. Desirae Gaspero of Penn rounded out the top-five finishers with a 9.400.
The Bears also enjoyed a 1-2-3 sweep on the floor, as Smith took first with a season-high 9.725. Verge grabbed second place with a 9.650, while Finst took third with a 9.625. Kochanski finished in fourth place with a 9.600, while Meredith Harper, also of Bridgeport, grabbed fifth place with a 9.525.
In the all-around competition, Finst led all competitors with a 38.700. Moon took second with a 37.700, while Verge and Petkun tied for third with a 37.125. Fifth place went to Korrie Powelski, of Bridgeport, who scored a 37.100. Smith rounded out Brown's all-arounders with a 36.650, good for seventh place out of 11 gymnasts.
The Bears continue action on Saturday, February 8, when they travel to Yale for a 12:30 p.m. meet.
