Brown Gymnasts Defeat Bridgeport

Providence, RI - The Brown gymnastics team dominated in its second home meet of the season, defeating Bridgeport, 186.125-180.575. Highlighting the Bears' performance was freshman Alicia Sacramone (Winchester, MA) with first place finishes on the bars, beam, floor exercise and in the all around.

Although the Purple Knights were victorious on the vault, beating Brown 45.725-45.150, the Bears dominated in every other event, and featured many individuals who achieved personal bests.

On the vault, freshman Alanna Kwoka (San Mateo, CA) posted Brown's best performance with a 9.425 earning a first-place finish, while sophomore Jennifer Sobuta (Maynard, MA) secured third-place with a 9.375. Leading the Purple Knights was Kathrine Reitz with a 9.35 for second, followed by Victoria Aarts with a 9.275.

The Bears outperformed Bridgeport 46.950-44.025 on the bars, while four individuals received personal/season highs. Freshman Izzy Kirkham-Lewitt (Venice, CA), junior Hannah Goldstein (New York, NY), Sobuta and Kwoka all achieved season highs, while Brown secured first through fourth place.

Led by Sacramone's 9.750 first-place performance, Goldstein grabbed second with a 9.525, while third belonged to Kirkham-Lewitt with a 9.475. Coming in fourth was Sobuta with a 9.250 and Kwoka earned a 8.950.

Brown also overtook Bridgeport on the beam, defeating the Purple Knights, 46.450-44.600. Highlighting Brown's performances was Sacramone's 9.85 for first, followed by Sobuta's personal best, 9.8, for second place. Junior Jessica Pestronk (Grand Blanc, MI) pulled in a 9.2 for the Bears, which was a season high for her as well.

Sacramone secured first on the floor with a 9.85, but Bridgeport's Reitz stole second place with a 9.575. Also performing well was Brown's Kirkham-Lewitt, who earned a season high 9.525 for third place.

Brown controlled the all-around competition, as Sacramone had a high 38.750, followed by a Sobuta's season high of 37.850. In third was Kwoka with a 36.600 and Kirkham-Lewitt earned a 36.500 for fourth.

The Bears will compete at UPenn on Sunday, Feb. 25 at 1:00 p.m. at the Ivy Classic.
