Providence, RI - The Brown gymnastics team (4-4) placed second in a tri-meet against in-state rivals, University of Rhode Island (3-0) and Rhode Island College (0-8) on Sunday. URI finished with a 184.825, followed by the Bears, 180.150 and RIC with a 170.250.
Freshman Alicia Sacramone (Winchester, MA), who currently ranks No. 14 in the nation on the balance beam with a 9.837 average, highlighted the day with a 9.775 for a first-place finish. Sophomore Jennifer Sobuta (Maynard, MA) took third on the beam with a 9.125.
On the vault, freshman Alanna Kwoka (San Mateo, CA) tied for second place with a 9.450, as URI's Kelly Gurney earned first with a 9.525. Gurney also took firsts on the bars, floor, and also in the all-around. Brown's Sobuta finished well on the vault with a 9.375.
Brown secured second and third place on the bars, with Sacramone taking second with a 9.425, and freshman Izzy Kirkham-Lewitt (Venice, CA) bringing home third with a 9.200. URI took the top three spots on the floor exercise, but highlighting the Bears squad was Sobuta with a 9.450 and sophomore Whitney Diederich (Naperville, IL) earning a 9.225.
In the all-around, Sacramone recorded second with a 37.600 and Sobuta followed closely behind with a 36.725 for third place.
The Bears will next see action on Saturday, Feb. 10 at the University of New Hampshire Invitational at 7:00 p.m.
