Gymnastics Earn First at Ocean State Challenge

Providence, RI - The Brown gymnastics team defeated both Rhode Island College and the University of Rhode Island to claim the Ocean State Challenge title on Sunday afternoon. The Bears posted a 186.200, as the Rams earned second (185.000) and the Rhode Island College Anchorwomen in third (168.775).
Led by Jennifer's Sobuta's (Maynard, MA) personal best 9.825 on the beam, the Bears cruised to a 46.025 overall team score. Following Sobuta was URI's Jordana Ginsburg (9.600), as Brown's Stephanie Albert (Sanibel, FL) earned third with a personal best 9.550.
On the bars, freshman Victoria Zanelli (Katy,TX) secured second place with a 9.525, as freshman Chelsey Binkley (Marietta, GA) had a personal best 9.350 for third. Placing in fourth was freshman Vida Rivera (Jackson Heights, NY) and Sobuta each with a 9.300.
URI locked up first and second place finishes on the vault, as Ananda Fraser posted a 9.700 and Lauren Wasilewski followed with a 9.650. Brown senior captain Sarah Durning (Roswell, GA) picked up a personal best 9.600 for third place, as Sobuta (9.525) came in fourth, Binkley (9.450) in fifth, and Albert (9.300) in sixth.
On the floor exercise, URI's Dani Riportella (9.575) and Ananda Fraser (9.550) came in first and second place, respectively, as Brown's Albert and Sobuta earned third place finishes with a 9.500. Also finishing strong was junior Whitney Diederich (Naperville, IL) with a 9.450 for fifth, and Rivera in sixth with a 9.300.
Sobuta was the Ocean State Challenge all-around champion, as she combined for a career-high 38.150. URI's Dani Riportella placed second in the all-around with a 37.175, and Brown's Binkley earned third with a 36.800.
Up next, the Bears will challenge the Rams of URI on Friday, Feb. 15, at 7:00 p.m.
