Bears Finish First In Home Opener

Providence, RI - The gymnastic team (3-2) had a strong performance in their home opener this afternoon, turning in team highs in all four events, vault 46.150, bars 44.650, beam 45.025 and floor 46.075, finishing the day with a 181.9 team score, for first place. Ithaca came in second with a 181.075, MIT came in third with a 176.650 and Rhode Island College came in fourth posting a 171.200.

In the all-around Brown finished two and three as freshman Brittany Anderson turned in a 36.200 and senior Amber Smith finished with a 35.70 on the day.

Led by Smith and senior Jessica McNell, the Bears recorded a 46.150 team score, their highest team total of the afternoon. Smith and McNell both scored 9.4, the Bears top finish and the third best score in the event. Freshman Jennifer Sobuta also placed high for Brown placing fifth with a 9.250 score.

Senior Sarah Cavett finished with a 9.350 on the bars, the best score in the event, while senior Jessica Pouchet finished third with a 9.1.

Anderson turned in the top mark on the beam, posting a 9.4 while sophomore Jessica Pestronk tallied a 9.325, finishing third.

The Bears clinched the win on the floor exercise as Anderson and Smith finished three and four with 9.4 and 9.375 scores. Another top finish for Brown was Pestronk who recorded a 9.3.

The Bears will travel to Ithaca, NY to take on Cornell on Saturday, February 4, for a 1:00 p.m. start.
