Finst and Verge Take 1st and 2nd In the All-Around To Help Lead Brown Past Alaska and Southern Connecticut

The Brown women's gymnastics team improved its record to 4-4 on the season with a 188.250-181.400 victory over Southern Connecticut and a 188.250-180.100 victory over Alaska on Sunday afternoon at the Pizzitola Center. Junior Jayne Finst (Delray Beach, FL) led the way for the Bears, winning all four events in addition to the individual all-around, while classmate Gina Verge (Scituate, MA) placed second on two events in addition to a second place finish in the all-around.

Brown opened up competition on the vault as Finst led all gymnasts with a season-high 9.550. Sarah Wesley and Kristan Silvestri, both of Southern Connecticut grabbed second (9.400) and third (9.375) respectively, while Brown freshman Amber Smith (Fort Myers, FL) took fourth with a season-high 9.350. Alaska's Mandi Burdick rounded out the top-five gymnasts with a 9.325.

On the bars, Brown grabbed a 1-2 sweep as Finst scored a season-high 9.625 to lead all gymnasts, while Verge came in second with a 9.575. Nicole Gregoire of Southern Connecticut finished in third place with a 9.425 and Burdick placed fourth with a 9.400. Brown sophomore Kelly Moran (Chevy Chase, MD) rounded out the top-five finishers with a season-high 9.300.

Brown completed a 1-2-3 sweep on the beam, as Finst, Verge, and sophomore Melissa Forziat (Garden City, NY) each posted season highs. Finst won with a 9.800, followed by Verge with a 9.750 and Forziat with a 9.500. Wesley and Silvestri each scored a 9.350 for Southern Connecticut, rounding out the top-five places.

The Bears also enjoyed a 1-2-3 sweep on the floor, as Finst won her fourth event with a season-high 9.825. Forziat and Smith tied for second, as each scored a season-high 9.700. Alaska's Jesse Currie took fourth with a 9.650, and teammate Joanne Mitchell grabbed fifth with a 9.600. Brown junior Jillian Day also scored a season-high on the floor, as she posted a 9.400 helping the Brown team score.

In the all-around competition, Finst led all competitors with a season-high 38.800. Verge took second with a season-high 37.475. Wesley grabbed third with a 37.425, while Burdick grabbed fourth with a 37.075. Brown's Smith rounded out the gymnasts, scoring a 36.850.

The Bears continue action on Sunday, February 2, hosting Pennsylvania, Bridgeport, and Brockport in a 1:00 p.m. meet at the Pizzitola Center. The meet is the final home meet of the year, and will also mark the final home meet for seniors Jamie Shapiro (Manalapan, NJ) and Sarah Keil (Morristown, NJ).
