Brown Gymnastics Defeats MIT and URI Club Team

Providence, RI - Sophomore Victoria Zanelli (Katy, TX) placed first on beam and second on the bars to help lead the Brown gymnastics team to a thrilling victory over the MIT Engineers and the Rhode Island Club Team on Sunday afternoon at the Pizzitola Sports Center. The Bears tallied a 186.500 overall score, while MIT posted a 179.350 followed by a 136.625 for the Rhode Island Club Team in its very first competition.
Beginning on the vault, the Bears were led by rookies Carli Wiesenfeld (Atlanta, GA) and Lilly Siems (Baltimore, MD) who earned scores of 9.550 and 9.525, respectively, to lock up second and third place finishes. MIT's Julia Zimmerman earned the title with a 9.775, as Brown sophomore Chelsey Binkley (Marietta, GA) placed fourth with a 9.400. Also finishing well was Melissa Bowe (Barnstable, MA) with a 9.275, Zanelli (9.250) and Izzy Kirkham-Lewitt (Venice, CA) with a 9.200 as Brown combined for a score of 47.000.
MIT's Zimmerman secured first place on the bars with a 9.500, but Brown locked up second through fifth place finishes. Zanelli placed second with a 9.400, followed by Siems and senior Jennifer Sobuta (Maynard, MA) each with a 9.250 for third, as Kirkham-Lewitt earned fifth with a 9.200. The Bears combined for a score of 45.850.
Leading the Bears on the beam was Zanelli and Binkley, who secured first-place with personal bests of 9.475. Following in third was Siems with a 9.400, and freshman Lauren Tucker (Farmington Hills, MI) in fourth with a 9.100. Freshman Katie Goddard (Kings Park, NY) also turned in a solid performance on beam, posting a 9.050 for sixth as Brown tallied a 46.500 overall.
The Bears did best on the floor exercise, earning a meet-high of a 47.150. Despite MIT's Zimmerman taking first place with a 9.625, Bruno was able to secure second place finishes with Helen Segal (Los Altos, CA) and Binkley's 9.575. MIT's Katie Mingo earned third place with a 9.475, as Wiesenfeld came in fifth (9.425), Whitney Diederich (Naperville, IL) in sixth (9.300) and Zanelli in seventh (9.275).
