Brown Gymnastics Defeats Southern Connecticut, 187.375-185.100

NEW HAVEN, CT - The Brown women's gymnastics team (1-2) earned its first win of the 2004 season with a 187.375-185.100 victory over Southern Connecticut on Sunday, January 18th. Senior Jayne Finst (Delray Beach, FL) led the Bears with first place finishes in three of the four events in addition to the individual all-around competition.

In the first event, Finst grabbed first for Brown on the vault with a 9.650, while senior Suzanne Schlosser (Tucson, AZ) took third in the event to help lead the Bears with a 9.325.

In the next event, the bars, Southern Connecticut took first, but Brown claimed the second, third and fourth place slots with Finst leading the way with a 9.575, good for second place. Sophomore Sarah Cavett (Hixson, TN) took third with a 9.500, while junior Kelly Moran (Chevy Chase, MD) placed fourth with a 9.350.

On the beam, Finst led all competitors with a 9.800, while junior Melissa Forziat (Garden City, NY) took second with a 9.600.

The floor was the final event, which Finst also won, scoring a 9.725. Sophomore Amber Smith (Fort Myers, FL) claimed third in the event with a 9.625.

Finst scored a 38.750 to win the individual all-around, while senior Gina Verge (Scituate, MA) took third in the all-around with a 37.075.

The Bears continue action on Sunday, January 24th when they host Cornell and Ithaca in a 1:00 p.m. meet, their 2004 home opener.
