Providence. RI - In its opening meet of the 2007-08 season, the Brown gymnastics team (2-0) defeated both Rhode Island College and M.I.T. at The Murray Center on Sunday afternoon. Brown claimed first place with a combined team score of 178.075, while M.I.T. (1-1) followed behind with a score of 175.100, and Rhode Island College (0-2) finished in third with a 161.200.
Despite the loss of Izzy Kirkham-Lewitt (Venice, CA) who was injured during her routine on the bars, Brown swept the event with freshman Vicki Zanelli (Katy, TX) earning first with a match-high 9.500. Freshman Vida Rivera (Jackson Heights, NY) finished in second with a 9.25 and senior captain Hannah Goldstein (New York, NY) finished in third with a 9.0.
On the vault, junior Jennifer Sobuta (Maynard, MA) took second place with a 9.35 and sophomore Stephanie Albert (Sanibel, FL) placed third with a 9.0. M.I.T.'s Julia Zimmerman was the top finisher with a 9.45.
On the beam, freshman Chelsey Binkley (Marietta, GA) was Brown's top finisher with a 9.250 for second place. M.I.T.'s Zimmermann locked up first (9.275), and Sophia Harrison (9.200) took third. Brown also had strong performances from Zanelli and Rivera, who both scored an 8.75 on the event.
On floor, Albert finished in second with a 9.45 and Sobuta earned third with a 9.25. M.I.T.'s Zimmerman earned first place with a 9.550. In the all-around, Brown's Sobuta finished third with a 35.95 and Zanelli finished fourth with a 35.90.
Brown will now travel to California to take on Cal State Fullerton and UCLA on Jan. 20th at 2:00 p.m.. After that, the Bears will be at home on Sunday, Jan. 27th at 1:00 p.m. against Bowling Green, West Chester, M.I.T., and Bridgeport.
