Gymnastics Closes Team Competition at USAG Preliminary Session

SEATTLE, Wash. – Senior Jorden Mitchell registered the fifth highest all-around total on the day, and Brown University gymnastics came in fifth place with a 192.225 during Team Preliminary Session No. 2 at the 2017 USA Gymnastics Collegiate National Championships on Friday night.

At Seattle Pacific University's Brougham Pavilion, the Bears – making their fifth straight team appearance at USAGs – trailed Lindenwood (195.100), Texas Woman's University (194.250), Seattle Pacific (193.775), and Yale (192.975) in their preliminary session.

Mitchell (Indianapolis, Ind.) advanced to the Individual Event Finals on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. ET as she tied for third place on beam with a 9.775. Mitchell will also compete on vault while junior Anya Olson (Farmington Hills, Mich.) will serve as an alternate on bars.

The top-five finishers on each event in the preliminary sessions advance to the individual finals with exceptions made based on team quotas. These gymnasts earn First Team USAG All-America honors while alternates garner Second Team USAG All-America laurels.

In the all-around, Mitchell posted the top score in the Bears' prelim and the fifth-highest score between the two sessions with a 38.825. The top eight all-around finishers between the two prelims gain First Team USAG All-America honors while the ninth and 10th place finishers take home Second Team USAG All-America accolades.

Olson supported Mitchell in the all-around, notching a 38.100, finishing seventh in the second prelim and 12th overall between the two sessions.

As a team, Brown scored a 48.100 on vault, a 48.575 on bars, a 47.100 on beam, and a 48.450 on floor.

On vault, Mitchell paced the Bears with a 9.775, tying her season high and finishing in seventh place. Sophomore Julia Green (Exton, Pa.) tied her personal best with a 9.725 while freshman Ally Rudd (Olympia, Wash.) posted a 9.625. Freshman Anne Christman (Amherst, N.H.) scored a 9.500, and Olson and senior Brooke Williams (Clyde Hill, Wash.) each landed a 9.475.

Olson led Brown on bars with a 9.775 while senior Caroline Morant (Chicago, Ill.) and junior Claire Ryan (Greenwood, Minn.) each logged a 9.750. Mitchell and junior Maggie McAvoy (Charlotte, N.C.) finished with a 9.700 and 9.600 respectively.

On beam, Mitchell scored a 9.775 for third place, earning herself a spot in the individual event finals, while Ryan matched her season high with a 9.675.

Finishing on floor, McAvoy scored a personal-best 9.750 while Christman and Olson each registered a 9.700. Green, Williams, and Mitchell charted a 9.675, 9.625, and 9.575 apiece.

Lindenwood and Texas Woman's advanced to the Team Finals on Saturday at 10:00 p.m. ET alongside Bridgeport (195.575) and Cornell (194.200) out of the first preliminary session.
