PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Caroline Morant won the all-around as Brown University gymnastics scored a 192.475 as a team, setting the second-highest mark for a season-opening score as a program, in a tri-meet with the University of Bridgeport and the University of New Hampshire on Saturday afternoon at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
Morant (Chicago, Ill.) took gold in the all-around with a 39.075, approaching her personal-best score of 39.175. She also captured first on beam with a career-high 9.850.
In their season and home debut, the Bears came in third at the meet with their score of 192.475 with the Purple Knights winning the meet behind a 194.475 and the Wildcats claiming second with a 193.375. Both Bridgeport and UNH took part in its second meet of the year.
As a team, Brown scored a 47.500 on vault, a 48.325 on bars, a 48.725 on beam, and a 47.925 on floor. The Bears' 192.475 trailed only the 2014 team's season-opening score of 192.550 for a program high mark.
Opening on vault, Morant led the way with a 9.650. Following her a trio of freshmen – Ally Rudd (Olympia, Wash.), Anne Christman (Amherst, N.H.), and Erin Howell (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) – scored 9.500, 9.500, and 9.450 respectively in their collegiate debuts. Senior Brooke Williams (Clyde Hill, Wash.) rounded out the scoring with a 9.400.
After missing last season due to injury, junior Anya Olson (Farmington Hills, Mich.) made her return to competition and led Brown with a personal-best 9.750 on bars, earning second place. Morant came in fourth with a 9.725 while Howell scored a 9.700. Junior Claire Ryan (Greenwood, Minn.) and Rudd tallied a 9.625 and 9.525 respectively.
On beam, Morant won the event with her personal-best 9.850 while sophomore Cassidy Jung (San Marino, Calif.) registered a career-high 9.800 for fourth place. Christman posted a 9.750, sophomore Julia Green (Exton, Pa.) logged a 9.700 in her collegiate debut, and Ryan and junior Regan Butchness (Barrington, Ill.) each compiled a 9.625.
Finishing on floor, Morant paced Brown with a 9.850, claiming fourth on the event. Williams followed with a 9.725, and Olson tallied a 9.600. Sophomore Morgan Hagenbuch (Norwich, N.Y.) added a 9.525, and Christman charted a 9.225.
Next, Brown competes at Rutgers with Nebraska and West Chester on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 7:00 p.m.
