PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Juniors Jorden Mitchell and Caroline Morant tied for first in the all-around, and Brown University gymnastics won its fifth meet of the year, scoring a 193.950, in its home and regular season finale in a quad meet at the Pizzitola Sports Center on Saturday night.
The Bears won the meet with their 193.950, defeating Southern Connecticut State University (191.000), Temple University (190.950), and the club team from the University of Rhode Island (170.825).
Mitchell (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Morant (Chicago, Ill.) each scored a 39.050 in the all-around, marking a personal-best score for Mitchell. Mitchell won her sixth all-around title on the year while Morant claimed her third all-around crown.
Mitchell earned her third floor title of the year, placing first in the event behind a career-high 9.900. Morant captured the beam title with a 9.800, tying a season high.
In her final home meet, senior Diana Walters (Austin, Texas) garnered the bars title for the third time on the season, scoring a personal-best 9.875. Prior to the meet, the Bears honored their four seniors – Walters, Stephanie Choo (Centerville, Ohio), Alexandra Chretien (Commerce Township, Mich.), and Corey Holman (Westford, Mass.) – for their dedication to the program.
The Bears led through all four rotations and finished with a season-high 48.825 as a team on floor. Brown notched a 48.125 on vault, a 48.750 on bars, and a 48.250 on beam.
On vault, Morant paced the Bears with a 9.750 to come in third while Mitchell and Holman tied for fifth with a 9.650 apiece. Freshman Gabrielle Hechtman (Bellmore, N.Y.) and junior Brooke Williams (Clyde Hill, Wash.) scored a 9.575 and 9.500 respectively.
Brown took six of the top seven spots on bars with Walters leading the way with her 9.875 for first place and a personal best. Mitchell tied for second with a 9.775, and Chretien placed third with a 9.750. Sophomores Maggie McAvoy (Charlotte, N.C.) and Claire Ryan (Greenwood, Minn.) came in a tie for fifth with a 9.675 each. Ryan tied her season high on the event, and Morant posted a 9.650.
Morant notched the hosts' top score on beam with a 9.800, tying a season high and finishing first. Mitchell followed with a 9.725 for third while Ryan logged a 9.650. Sophomore Regan Butchness (Barrington, Ill.) scored a 9.575, and freshman Morgan Hagenbuch (Norwich, N.Y.) tallied a personal-best 9.500.
Finishing on floor, Mitchell recorded her career-high 9.900 for first place. Morant supported her with a 9.850, matching a season high and placing second. Walters registered a fifth-place finish behind a 9.775, Hechtman tied a personal-best 9.725, and Hagenbuch set a career high with a 9.575.
Next, Brown will compete at the ECAC Championship on Saturday, March 19 at noon at the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va.
