PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University gymnastics scored a season-high 49.050 on floor in its final rotation, rallying to defeat Yale University, 193.150-192.775, in the team's home finale on Sunday afternoon at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
The Bears trailed the Bulldogs after the fist (48.200-47.675), second (96.325-96.300), and third (145.050-144.100) rotations but used their season-best floor score in the fourth rotation to edge their visiting Ivy and ECAC rivals.
Brown posted a 47.675 on vault, a 48.625 on bars, and a 47.800 on beam to gain first place for the second time in three meets.
In the all-around, junior Diana Walters (Austin, Texas) took first with a 38.875 while sophomore Caroline Morant (Chicago, Ill.) recorded a 38.425, and classmate Jorden Mitchell (Indianapolis, Ind.) posted a 37.325.
All six Bears scored at least a 9.700 on floor to help Brown gain the come-from-behind victory. Morant and fellow sophomore Brooke Williams (Clyde Hill, Wash.) each registered a 9.850 to tie for first on the event with the score marking a career high for Williams.
In support, Walters posted a 9.825 to tie for third, Mitchell recorded a career-best 9.800 for fifth, freshman Anya Olson (Farmington Hills, Mich.) tied her personal-best with a 9.725, and senior captain Danielle Hoffman (Bedford, N.Y.) notched a 9.700.
Starting on vault, Morant paced the Bears with a 9.725 while junior Corey Holman (Westford, Mass.) came in fourth with a 9.650, and Walters finished in fifth with a 9.600. Williams and Hoffman tallied a 9.400 and 9.300 respectively.
On bars, Walters tied her personal record with a score of 9.850 to take second place. Morant came in third with a 9.750, and junior Alexandra Chretien (Commerce Township, Mich.) took fifth with a 9.725. Mitchell scored a 9.650, freshman Claire Ryan (Greenwood, Minn.) tallied a 9.650, and classmate Maggie McAvoy (Charlotte, N.C.) posted a 9.625.
Freshman Regan Butchness (Barrington, Ill.) led Brown on beam with a score of 9.725 to finish in second. Mitchell notched a 9.675 to tie for fourth, Ryan scored a 9.625, and Walters registered a 9.600.
Next, Brown competes at the ECAC Championship at Yale in New Haven, Conn., on Saturday at 1 p.m.
