UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Senior Michelle Shnayder (Lincolnshire, Ill.), sophomore Diana Walters (Austin, Texas) and freshman Caroline Morant (Chicago, Ill.) competed at the 2014 NCAA Gymnastics University Park Regional Championships at Penn State on Saturday, representing Brown gymnastics as individual qualifiers in the all-around. Morant finished 10th (38.975), Shnayder placed 12th (38.675) and Walters took 13th (37.725). The three gymnasts marked the most single-season individual regional qualifiers in Brown history.
The top two finishers in all-around from non-advancing teams were selected to move on to the 2014 NCAA Gymnastics Championships.
Walters opened on vault with a 9.675, Shnayder went for 9.475 on bars and Morant tied for fifth overall with a 9.850 on floor. Morant followed with another fifth-place effort on vault with a career-high 9.850 and Shnayder posted a 9.600 on beam as Walters took the bye.
Morant and Shnayder both had byes on the third rotation, leaving Walters to compete on bars. Despite faltering, Walters rebounded to post a 9.525 on beam in the next rotation. Morant just missed a career-best with a 9.725 on bars and Shnayder tied for fifth on floor with a 9.850 to complete the fourth rotation.
Shnayder earned a 9.750 in an exceptionally strong vault field and Morant posted a 9.550 on beam to complete their day as Walters sat through another bye in the fifth rotation. In the final rotation of the day, Walters was the lone Brown competitor and turned in a 9.750 on floor.
Brown is set to host USA Gymnastics Collegiate Nationals on April 11-13, for which the Bears qualified as a team for the second year in a row. After a fourth-place finish last season, Brown looks to add another championship to its list of 2014 accomplishments, which includes a second-straight Ivy Classic title and the program's first-ever ECAC Championship.
