PROVIDENCE, R.I. – For the second year in a row, the Brown gymnastics team earned a team bid to USA Gymnastics Collegiate Nationals, which the Bears will host at the Pizzitola Sports Center on Apr. 11-13. After a fourth-place finish last season, Brown looks to add another championship to its list of 2014 accomplishments, which includes a second-straight Ivy Classic title and the program's first-ever ECAC Championship.
Tickets for USA Gymnastics Collegiate Nationals are on sale now. Single-session general admissions tickets are $5, single-session chairback tickets are $12 and all-session upstairs tickets are $40. To purchase tickets, click here.
The Bears will take on seven other squads that qualified as a team, including Air Force, four-time defending-champion Bridgeport, Cornell, Lindenwood, Seattle Pacific, Temple and Texas Woman's. Centenary, Penn, Southern Connecticut State, West Chester and Yale had individual gymnasts qualify for a chance to compete for individual events.
Brown aims to build upon the success of the Bears' first USA Gymnastics Collegiate Nationals appearance as a team last season. Brown placed fourth in the team finals, while senior Julia Meyer earned First Team All-American on beam and Emily Lutfey was dubbed Second Team All-American on vault and floor.
The team bid comes on the tails of three gymnasts securing individual berths to the NCAA Gymnastics Regionals yesterday. Senior Michelle Shnayder (Lincolnshire, Ill.), sophomore Diana Walters (Austin, Texas) and freshman Caroline Morant (Chicago, Ill.) will represent Brown in the all-around at the University Park Regional hosted by Penn State on April 5. Sophomore specialist Alexandra Chretien (Commerce Township, Mich.) will serve as an alternate on bars. The three Bears mark the most individual Regional qualifiers in a single season for Brown as the trio will battle for two all-around qualifying spots for the NCAA Championship.
The 2014 edition of USA Gymnastics Collegiate Nationals kicks off with team semifinals on Friday, April 11. Session I begins at 2 p.m. with Bridgeport, Cornell, Lindenwood and Airforce. Session II starts at 7 p.m. and features Temple, Seattle Pacific, Brown and Texas Woman's.
